Dear Stuart,
Thanks for these great points. It is a really key component of Ruby that you can start off with something simple and progress to more advanced concepts and techniques as you learn more. It is a very fluid growth.
I was looking at this page about OpenJDK on Wikipedia
This seems to imply that the GPL applies to the core implementation, but not the Java Class Libraries. I'm not sure where this stands in terms of proprietary / free + open.

 Thank you so much, there are useful ideas:
a first solution could be :
in "windows" try to call AddFontResourceEx of GDI dll
and in "linux" copy font file in ~/fonts dir.
I'll try to do so.
Regards
Antonio

 I should have been clearer in the example. This is the actual situation:
class FreightViewModel
def initialize
do_some_init_stuff()
end
end
and this is what it will become if i apply that solution:
class FreightViewModel
def new(*args, &block)
obj = allocate
obj.do_some_init_stuff
obj.send(:initialize, *args, &block)

 Not necessarily for the best.
Consider what happens when you buy, say, a cat. Do you have the right
to torture it to death over a long period of time? Most people would say
you don't.
If you buy a house, do you have the right to, say, set fire to it? Probably
not, especially if it's near other houses.
