  I have written and tested programs from others for a long time and &lt;br&gt; cannot find any way to get UNC files fast. &lt;br&gt; My program will find information on 2000 to 3000 files per second on a &lt;br&gt; USB drive but only return information on about 2 files per second. &lt;br&gt; What can I do to get a useful speed on UNC drives similar to Explorer&#39;s

  Well, now you&#39;re down to the point of what optimizations the compiler &lt;br&gt; uses and doesn&#39;t -- that&#39;s a tough &#39;un to know, a priori when the vendor &lt;br&gt; doesn&#39;t publish such things. &lt;br&gt; I&#39;d make a guess that it doesn&#39;t see the empty loop because it&#39;s a &lt;br&gt; higher level than the unused variable or there was a design decision

  Note that Winzip actually makes a copy of the zip file without the &lt;br&gt; deleted file and then deletes and renames the old file. Whether &lt;br&gt; utilities such as Info-zip work in a better fashion I have no idea. &lt;br&gt; Tony

  I tested your code, but without t(3) and t(4). Yes it&#39;s a case of &lt;br&gt; optimization. I checked the assembly output and VB optimized the t(1) case &lt;br&gt; out of the loop because &amp;quot;wd&amp;quot; was not used. When the only change that I made &lt;br&gt; is moving &amp;quot;wd&amp;quot; from a local to a modal level variable, VB doesn&#39;t remove &lt;br&gt; what&#39;s inside the loop.
